Firefighters volunteer Association of Nepal (FAN) is a non-governmental, service-oriented and non-profit organization. It has been established in the year 2000 with objectives of creating awareness among the public about fire and other disasters and drawing attention of the concerned authorities on this matter.

FAN is committed to work for the betterment of the fire fighters to become efficient and good enough for solving disaster problems in the country. FAN shares idea and knowledge by organizing training, seminar etc. with the assistance from different individuals and organizations. FAN studies the prevailing fire and other disaster service systems, disaster prevention technique, fire equipment and operational procedures in the international scenario and works towards bringing those into Nepal if possible.

Our organization is new but we have achieved some remarkable success e.g.

FAN has received 2 fire engines and 4 ambulances from Federation of World Volunteers Firefighters Association (F.W.V.F.A.) and Japan Firefighters Association through Japanese Embassy and handed over to municipalities and Village Development Committees (VDC) in Terai and hilly area of Nepal. Click here. FAN organizes public awareness training programmes in different parts of Nepal. At present FAN is having a dialogue with Ministry of Home Affairs for making firefighters law in Nepal. FAN does research work regarding various subjects related to disaster in Nepal. And it also publishes articles about the same in the leading newspapers regularly. FAN makes documentaries about disasters in Nepal and informs organizations and public about disasters in Nepal. As a future programmes, FAN is planning to bring a team of technicians and trainers to give training to Nepali fire-fighters, FAN wants to make managed, well trained and equipped fire fighter team in all over the country to be able to fight with fire and rescue people/property from any other disasters. FAN is committed to improve fire fighting system and want to reach Asian standard.

Nepal, recognized as one of the poor and land locked countries of South Asia has different types of geographical weaknesses. Nepal suffers a lot from natural calamities and disasters such as flood, land slide, earthquake and fire every year due to fragile physical structure and unmanageable settlement. Thus, the loss and impact faced by the country from the above mentioned problems are increasing day by day.

Mr. Kewal Kumar Chapagain.
Chairman, FAN.

In addition to that the economic condition of the country is also not strong enough. 60% of the national budget is covered by foreign aid, which obviously cuts down the budget for development activities resulting poor implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the proposed and on going projects. The budget sanctioned for development work has been spent in the rehabilitation of disaster victim i.e. relief work, treatment, reconstruction, rescue and so on and so forth. However, the work done so far in this regard is not satisfactory because of the ever lasting property, social discrimination, the difficult physical structure of the country, illiteracy and lack of awareness.

In this context, it is a great challenge for us to provide general information about precautionary measure to be taken regarding natural calamities so that the loss can be minimized. Formation of various small and trained rescue teams can be a positive aspect in this matter.

Today’s world is the world of technology. The world has achieved a lot through this technology. It has developed hundreds of tools and materials to fight against disaster. People should be made aware of such tools and materials through publicity so that they can make proper use of those things when necessary.

Due to high population, the settlements are dense. In urban area one can hardly find open spaces between two or more houses. The roads in the old town are very congested and are full of small alleys. The situation in the rural area is not much different to urban as most of the houses there are also clustered in one place. In such circumstance if disaster incident takes place the life of people will be in hazard.

Since the development of civilization, fire has become one of the most essential things to survive. But our past has shown that a little carelessness while handling the same fire invites havoc in the society. Many people have lost their lives and property due to a little carelessness while handling fire. Other has become handicapped and parenthesis by the same.

Nepal is a country full of small and big mountains and hills. Many disasters incidents have taken place here alike any other country in the world and fire is one of them. Despite of the difficult situation, we have committed ourselves to fight against fire hazard and have already started some awareness raising activities regarding fighting with fire and other disaster. We expect regular national and international support in our initiative. We would like to assure you that your helping hands for human welfare will not go in vain.

Thank you  .

Nepal is a small developing country of South Asia. More than 60% of its land is covered by high hills and snow capped mountains. It has no access to the sea but is very rich in natural resources such as hydropower and mines. Nepal is very poor in infrastructure development because of its landscape. In the present age of development Nepal still faces transportation, communication and many other problems. Of all the problems natural calamities faced by Nepal are the most vulnerable.

Mr. Bijay Singh Lama
Gen. Secretary FAN.

Every year many people die or become homeless due to landslide, flood earthquake, fire and so on. In the context of blossoming of population and houses, fire, flood, earthquake has become a serious problem throughout the country. Many industries, villages, houses and even the forests are seen on blaze every now and then. Many people have lost their lives and property and the other have become handicapped due to this. Most of the incidents take place because people are not aware of how to handle the same. Besides, people also lack preventive measure regarding this.

Most of the big cities do have one or two fire brigade and team of fire fighters. But the conditions of the fire brigades are miserable. In another word they are not well managed. Similarly the team of fire fighters are also not well trained to fight against those calamities.

Taking into account the above mentioned situation, we have established a fire-fighting institute with the following objectives:-

  • To make people aware of fire and other disaster.

  • Disseminate knowledge and information regarding preventive measures.

  • Protect life and property by visiting the place upon information.

  • Carry out rescue work.

  • Arrange treatment.

  • Distribute relief materials, rescue technology.

  • Train fire-fighters.

  • Bring International support.

The task is not an easy one. However, our team is fully committed to fulfil the stipulated objectives passing through any challenge. But, as our institution is an independent and autonomous one we lack financial and other support to carry out the above said activities. We do have established a small fund through donation from ourselves and from some other openhearted people but that alone is not enough to make the programme sustainable. Therefore, we very much appreciate your support in any form. And we assure you that your support will be utilized in very possibility.

Thank you very much.

Dear friends,

In today's world accidents are ever increasing whether they are natural calamities or man made. It is our responsibilities to control the same. If all could pay attention to mitigate such disasters and protect lives and properties, the losses could be minimized. Food, shelter and cloths are the burning question of ours. It would be extremely difficult to compile resources at the time of disaster.

Mr. Prem Bahadur K.C
Retired Fire Chief
Kathmandu Fire Brigade

The victims of the disasters face human, financial and social tensions throughout their lives and cannot come out of the same. Thus, we are in need of your valuable suggestions and support to protect from such unpleasant circumstances.
What is a calamity? How does it occur? When and where is it more effective? To understand all these is the need of today. With the objective of making public aware of these we have established Firefighters volunteer Association of Nepal (FAN) and we expect all kinds of assistance from all the national and international organizations.
We are amazed to hear about the modern inventions of the devices to fight with the disaster but are deprived of using the same. Backwardness has the biggest challenge for us. Realizing the fact that it is imperative for us to do something and this has led the establishment of FAN. We have rescued people in the past with old training but now the situation has become complex. Rescue Team should be maintained at the Asian or South Asian standard.
In order to develop and extend awareness raising programme we are in need of all kinds of support from national and international organizations.

Thank you very much .
